PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH

The purpose of this research is based on the following objectives:
1. To determine how well the pupils perform in word problems dealing with the whole numbers and using the four operations.
2. To determine how the teaching and learning of word problems is conducted in these classes.
3. To conduct research regarding the perceptions of pupils working in a cooperative learning environment to solve mathematical word problems.
4. To determine if cooperative learning can make the pupils’ learning in Mathematics more enjoyable.

ACTIVITIES USING LOGO SOFTWARE IN MATHEMATICS CLASSROOM

Hye again. This is another programme that are very useful to our students. Have you heard 'LOGO PROGRAMME?'
Logo is the term used to describe a range of programs that in various ways provide the user with the means of controlling the movement of an object on the screen (the turtle).

The implementation of Logo into the classroom helps students develop intuitions about mathematical concepts. The program also promotes higher levels of thinking by making the student explore these ideas. It provides a means for the student to manipulate figures and investigate their properties visually. This use of technology makes the students "do mathematics" rather than "learn mathematics."

To construct a line in Logo for instance, it is imperative that the students think about lengths of lines, angles between lines, and how many lines to use. This promotes conceptual learning. Recognizing shapes is not enough in Logo. The student must go beyond initial recognition and explore the definitions behind the shapes. Logo provides a means to achieve this.

Have a look to my activities that I have done to my student Yr 7.

EUCLIDEAN REALITY

It is very useful for teachers and students to create any geometrical shapes. You can measure the angle and the length even you can find the perimeter of the shapes. Have a look to my activity that I have done with one of my student.

PM 5402
Assalamualaikum and welcome to my blog. This is the first blog I have created in partial fulfillment of the requirements for my first assignment in Technologies and Mathematics Education in Universiti Brunei Darussalam. I am doing my Master in Mathematics Education. My research for this course will be basically on teaching mathematics dealing with word problems through cooperative learning. I would like to involve one of the government schools in Brunei. The students will divide into two classes; one class is select as the "experimental "group, which receives the intervention through cooperative learning. On the other hand the other class is select as the "control" group which is teaching using the normal method. I am still in the process of building up my knowledge in this field. Hopefully I can start writing up my first chapter very soon.Thank you for visiting my page and I hope you enjoy reading it.

METHODS OF TEACHING MATHEMATICS

METHODS OF TEACHING MATHEMATICS
TOPIC: MONEY
LESSON / ACTIVITY PLAN

· Prior Knowledge
1. Have understand and knowledge of coins and notes.
2. Can understand and use $, ¢ symbols.
3. Are able to work out change and totals using specific coins.
4. Have been introduced to the use of the decimal point in money.
5. The relationship between the coins and notes.
6. How to count the money correctly.
7. How to read the price of a product.

· Aims of the activities
Activity: Newspaper
Students will be able to do the following:
1. Work as a class to solve word problems focusing on addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division.
2. Work with the partners to make up their own word problems.
3. Working cooperatively and contributing positively in-group learning activities
4. Identifying money term

5. Appreciate money and understand its effects.
6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding about money.
7. Find and read the price of a product.

· Equipments to be used:
1. Old newspapers.
2. Scissors.
3. Glue.
4. Marker pens.
5. Colour pens.
6. Manila cards.

· Grade level
Primary 5

· Proposed sequence of the lesson (activities):

Activity: Newspapers
1. Begin the lesson by asking students to think about how money is used in their daily lives.
2. Tell them to take some old newspapers from the front table and then have them pick partners in three or four.

3. Tell them to select any pictures from the newspapers that they want to buy with their prices.
4. Cut them out and stick on the manila cards given.
5. Then have each group make up one or more word problems focusing on money.
6. The problems should give them practice working on addition, subtraction, multiplication or division.
7. After they have written the problems, have them prepare their own solution, as well as a written explanation of the steps they used to solve the problems.
8. Have each group present its problem to the class.
